The Photography Book:
History and Planning

4-8 september 2011

Volcano Asención in Ometepe, Nicaragua.

Workshop

The vitality of the photography book makes it extremely relevant and full of potential in today’s world. In this period of the so-called demise of paper, it offers photography its most powerful vehicle through which images are delivered in concrete form.

During the workshop week, participants will delve into the essence of the photography book, beginning with a look at its history, continuing with an analysis of its structure and materials and finally producing the first maquette of their own book. The latter will be used to focus on editing and materials.

Students are expected to propose a project which they will work on during the final four days of the workshop.

All books and fanzines on display during the Little Big Press exhibition will be available for use throughout the course. The exhibition, now a travelling library, provides a rather exhaustive look at small and/or independent publishing houses in Europe and the United States.

3/3

3/3 was formed in Roma during a meeting between Chiara Capodici e Fiorenza Pinna. The idea was to create projects based on the myriad forms of the photographic image. Through exhibitions, books, typographic experiments, workshops and constant attention to Internet phenomena and developments, 3/3 designs projects to stimulate viewer enjoyment of the photographs and facilitate international interaction. The aim is to raise the level of appreciation of the photographer’s work. Since 2009 3/3 has curated a series of exhibitions and personal publications produced by young Italian photographers, among them Fabio Barile and Marco Lachi, and Dimensione Massima collective 10x12 cm. In collaboration with Mandeep it promoted the Sochi Project in Rome. It also curated Joel Sternfeld’s first personal exhibition in Italy and conducted a workshop dedicated to the construction of a photography book with Rinko Kawauchi. During these first few years, 3/3 has focused more and more energy on photography books, most notably via the Little Big Press exhibition held in October 2010 at the Officine Fotografiche in Rome. 3/3 looks at the Italian tradition of photography in relation to the international photographic culture, from independent publishing houses to the larger more established editors. Both of which are experiencing an interesting period of development and diffusion.
